What to see in Foligno: history, art and the Giostra della Quintana

Foligno is Umbria's third city by population and the main centre of the Umbrian Valley. Less visited than Assisi or Perugia, it offers a historic centre of real quality, excellent restaurants and an authentically Umbrian atmosphere. It is just 5 km from Agriturismo Il Barco.

The Cathedral and Piazza della Repubblica

The Cathedral of San Feliciano, with its double Romanesque façade, dominates Piazza della Repubblica — one of the most elegant squares in Umbria. The side portal of 1201 is a masterpiece of medieval sculpture. Opposite stand the Palazzo Comunale and the Palazzo Trinci, one of the most complete seigneurial residences of medieval Umbria.

This is Foligno's hidden gem. The palace of the Trinci lords (14th–15th century) preserves a cycle of frescoes of extraordinary quality, including the Hall of the Liberal Arts and the Planets and a Gothic loggia with frescoes inspired by antiquity. Rarely visited, almost always queue-free.

The Giostra della Quintana

In June and September, Foligno relives the 17th century: ten districts in historical costume compete in an equestrian tournament involving striking armoured figures with a lance. It is one of the most spectacular historical re-enactments in central Italy, with over 600 participants in period costume.

What to do in the surroundings

Foligno is the ideal starting point for hiking on Monte Subasio, visiting the Cascata delle Marmore (50 km), Rasiglia — Umbria's little Venice — and the Parco Regionale del Subasio. The city also has some of the best restaurants in the Umbrian Valley.
